Some of that is true, some of that is not, sort of.

What i mean is, with the older players there was no interest in their salary.
We knew, (certainly when i started going) that these guys were earning much more than i did, but they wouldn't earn in a year what i'd earn in 10 (or more) so we didn't care.
There is now that element of jealousy, and a divide between fans and players due to what they earn. A players wages seem to be big news these days.
That, for me, means we all often have less patience than we should and are quicker to cry "lazy" or "doesn't care".

THe second point is sort of related. Back when wages were fairly flat, when players didn't earn as much as now there wasn't the same drive to move on. Players were much more likely to stay at a club where they felt settled, and were loved by the fans. Leaving all that behind for a couple of hundred quid a week wasn't really worth it.
That way you got more players staying at clubs cause they wanted to be there, hence the relationship.

I don't want to go all nostalgic and say players played for the love of the game, cause that wasn't true. It was still their job and their living. However it does seem there was less of a materialistic element back in the day than there is now.
