I haven't been 100% convinced when I've seen him - good bits and bad bits.

But in the back of my mind has been "If he's rubbish he surely wouldn't've been getting starts for Middlesborough, so he must be good."

I reckon he'd've looked brilliant playing alongside Dublin in defence. Ole Dubbers always made his defensive partner look better - Dublin & Shackell together were very good, likewise Dublin and Doherty. Shackell and Doherty often looked like a bloody liability.
