He'd done well from 2001 to 2004, but I think his failure to get the best out of some of his Premiership signings - Bentley, Helveg and Jonson in particular - caused him to change tack, and sign players who he thought were down to earth, and knew what the Championship was all about - hence Jarrett, Thorne, Louis-Jean, Robinson and Hughes.
If you look at it, by summer 2006 he'd started making decent signings again - Croft and Dublin were worth having. But by then he'd lost the squad and the fans, really. But as you say - on the whole, a more Good than Bad manager for us, and miles better than Grant, Hamilton or Roeder!
