I know quite a few people who have found the exact opposite. In fact, for HDD Ipods the failure rate is reported to be anything up to 20% or more, although this is greatly reduced with the more modern solid state Flash-memory jobbies.

Most likely it comes down to how you look after them and whether you get a "good" one. I bought a dinky 20GB Sony about 4 years ago which is still going like a trouper, but it has a fairly pampered life. I very much like the look of the new 16GB solid-state Sony one, but I don't have the heart to get rid of my old one.
