From a rational, commercial viewpoint - agreed. But

football clubs arent really seen as such by the majority of fans, are they?

Commercially it makes perfect sense. But to get to that point, the club will have to be on it's knees league position wise (possibly relegated), and with that comes a whole load of anguish, fear and uncertainty. Would most fans see, and accept, short term pain for a (potential) long term gain? So surely fans will start to see him as the Devil incarnate?
