if nothing happens when you plug that in it's fooked

Windows XP and Vista will have the drivers for a generic USB mass storage device and would automatically install them when you plug said drive in. If it didn't have the drivers it would recognise that drive and ask you to find the drivers for it. If neither of these things happen the drive is fooked. Take it back and get another one homes.
