hoover78 21 Mar 23:45
That was exactly his problem MM, he lacked bottle and a touch of pace but was a good player. He married my sis in 2002. I think he was very good mates with Graeme Allen and Andy Hinchcliff off the pitch. He is back in Darlo with my sis and their baby boy Aidan. He is a nice lad, he can't take it when i beat him in snooker though ;-).

miscreant man 21 Mar 23:50
I can remember having a pint with them . Jon and Graham with their dads after a reserve game. Next morning i spoke to Colin, their manager and praised them , nice lads , everton centre halves to replace watson etc...

'' If you put the two together , you might get a player ! '' i was staggered. I knew it to be true as he' was never wrong. Always questioned my judgement there on in.

hoover78 21 Mar 23:54
Jon's dad Tel is a lovely fella. I don't think he was ever that interested in footy MM, liked the game but you gotta love it to make it imo anyway. Most important thing is that he is a good lad and a good laugh. The last time i met was xmas and he is always in good form.

miscreant man 21 Mar 23:55

Whittler 21 Mar 23:58
Met a few former Everton players at functions in Irthlingborough - Brian Labone, Gordon West, Jimmy Husband, Gary Stevens,Duncan McKenzie, Dave Watson, Barry Horne and Derek Mountfield. Found Mountfield, Stevens, Mckenzie, Labone and West most approachable, West and Labone in particular. I also saw by chance former Evertonian John Oster last year at Reading train station. I knew I recognised the face and after a few seconds wondered if it was Oster. I wasn't sure whether he was still playing for Reading, but when this was confirmed I knew it had to be him.He still only looked about 19. A beggar who'd been going from one person to the next saying he's been robbed and needed the trainfare to get home approached him for money and he politely declined. I also saw former Hibs, Birmingham and Villa player at Tescos Store at Five Ways, Edgbaston. He was foul-mouthing the female staff about closing the checkout just before he arrived. They were totally unaware who he was until he'd gone and I mentioned it.The one woman was a big Villa fan too. It was defo Des, because I googled his present image when I got home to make certain.

I tried to reach some common ground listed his faults , his good points but said he won't drop to Oldham , dowie said , no mate , crystal Palace - he took the job 2 weeks later , some people got 25s.

Used to live next door to a Chesterfield player a few years back, Hudson, decent bloke and friendly enough. Lived in the same apartment block in Brum as Upson, Penant and Dunn for a while, met em a few times in and about the place. Penant as thick as to be expected, other two guys were alright.

ENGLANDAWAY 26 Nov 22:52
Met heaps, had lunch with Gazza (he is nuts), arm-wrestled Jose Marie Chilavert (strong guy) and knew Freddie Ljungberg (so what if he is?) personally.
My highlights are taking the ball off Peter Jackson (Huddersfield captain) and sending him off the pitch and outplaying Trevor Cherry in midfield to beat his team 9-2.

once walked into local and carlton palmer was stood at bar talking to bar maid, we started playing pool and said alright to him he seemed ok

mel sterland was once my manager for about a season in the sheffield league, was a good laugh took the whole stamp business in his stride when the lads gave him some. imre varadi always used to come up with him but kempt himself to himself

on varadi one of my mates once had him pinned up against a wall in the pub when he was playing for rotherham. varadi was giving it the big man act but apparently soon supped up with his tail between his legs

one of work mates met john terry on a beach and him and missus got pic took with him said he was a sound enough bloke

also met quite a few of sheff utd/ rotherham players from a while back down to being at the clubs

and finally not a football one but my mates claim to fame is he had a can of coke with johnny herbert on his yacht in monaco, herbert called all 4 of em on only thing he had on though was coca cola, apparantlt a top bloke

Birchola the Reincarnation 27 Nov 09:04
Brian Small - In a bar on Broad St, Brum when he was at Stoke. Down to earth guy.

Dave Bennett - Funny guy with Ian Wright type arrogance. Loved it when I asked about his '87 FA Cup goal.

Doug Ellis - He was on our budget BMI flight not long after he'd sold Villa for zillions! :^0 I chatted to him at the Brum airport carousel. All the 'Deadly Doug' stuff is just a front. He was a soft old guy with a good sense of humour. There was a buxom blonde standing opposite us at the carousel. When his missus' back was turned Doug turned to me and said with a chuckle 'I've been standing here staring at those trying to work out if they're real or not' :^0
