I have two LaCie external drives

daisy chained and connected to a FW 800 port; but the ones I have support FW 400, FW 800 and USB 2. They're not the cheapest; but seem totally reliable and look good. FW is generall faster than USB 2. LaCie come formatted for OS X; but you can, of course, reformat them for Windows. Not particularly portable; but I'm guessing, like me, you need the extra space for music, films, backup, etc.
