Techy advice sought

My laptop is dying on it's arse and I believe the main culprit is the hard drive, the poor luv is only 80gb.

I'd like to replace it with a lovely old 320gb jobby, but I have no idea where to start when it comes to doing it (don't really have the cash to buy the drive AND hire a man with pens).

I have the Windows install (recovery?) disc that came with the lappy, as well as the driver discs.

I sit a case of just tearing out the old drive, chucking the new one in and installing everything?

Or will I have to transfer stuff to the new drive first, using a USB cradle or sumfink like that?

Will a standard 2.5" SATA drive do? It's esentially an ASUS but I got it from Evesham about 2&1/2 years ago (1.8g Dual Core, 1gb RAM, 256mb dedicated graphics).
