This kind of television (strictly, Joseph, Maria, X factor, etc) quite clearly attracts a huge audience and is eminently commercially viable. ITV does the genre quite well.

So why are they spending my licence fee trying to compete with that rather than creating new, quality output that may not be commercial but is worth supporting?
