we were never going to have a better squad than last year's though

unless you noticed we got relegated - last year we were a Prem team and this year we aren't. That makes a vast difference financially (and in your ability to attract players). The only fair comparison is with the 2003/4 Championship winning squad, and this one IS better so we are making some progress. Significant improvement requires another promotion.
