I've never paid for virus protection (always used AVG or Avast)

and I've never had a virus.

I'd go with Avast personally. You'll never even notice it's there.

I used to use free AVG and I found it was a pain in the arse, always bugging me when it wanted to download stuff and it did slow my computer down a bit too.
