if that's the case, then I'd say there are two sensible options

(1) actually give him a game? Just to be sure? (Perhaps one where we have absolutely no good options for his position. Like today.)

(2) Send him back. Is there *any* point having him at the club if he doesn't play today?

The third option - of having him at the club as some sort of non-playing expense for the season - doesn't seem very sensible to me.
