there will be many pens of identical nib width, and he wouldn't want to order randomly at that level.

Can't imagine he'd used anything as unscientific (and frankly feminine) as 'colour', though. All classifications would need to be measurable and testable.

Perhaps "height from which pen can be dropped without damage to functioning"?

or density of ink output. Something like that.
