Aha - see below - and I reckon I can explain that bit

I reckon it crept up on them cos they'd just stepped out of a major crash and their ears were ringing a lot. I grant that that doesn't explain why WE didn't hear it: but then the monst may have been there all along, recovering from all the bombing it'd just survived. So it didn't creep up on them: they just didn't realise it was there above them all along. Without any gunfire. Cos everyone was reloading. or summink.
