Out Of Touch
When Kevin Keegan resigned from Newcastle for the second time, his former employers set about leaking 'information' that would make them look terribly sensible, and their erstwhile messiah look like a bumbling, out of touch fool.
Quite why they couldn't work that out from his admission before he took the job that he hadn't watched a game in three years is unclear, but some face-saving had to be done.
From The Sunday Times on September 7:
'Instead, told in the summer that he had a budget of ?12m, Keegan proposed signing David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Frank Lampard and Thierry Henry. "It was so bizarre that you had to wonder if he was doing it on purpose, to try to get sacked," our source said.
'"There was no getting through to him. What he wanted would have cost the club ?200m in transfer fees and wages, and he had been told over and over again that he had around ?12m to spend. It is common knowledge that we have been looking for a centre-half. Kevin's suggestions were Jonathan Woodgate, Sami Hyypia and Richard Dunne. Where's the residual value in them?"'
With these accusations that Keegan was out of touch and living in the past in mind, let's take a look at the reports in this morning's papers regarding who they have lined up as potential managers:
'Terry Venables will decide this morning whether to become Newcastle's caretaker manager' - The Sun. Venables' last job in sole charge of a football club was at Leeds in 2003.
'The 65-year-old has spoken to a senior figure at the club and further discussions are expected this morning, although overtures have also been made to Glenn Hoddle' - The Times. Hoddle's last job in sole charge of a football club was at Wolves in 2006.
'Should he and Hoddle rebuff the club's overtures, it is understood Wise and Jimenez will turn their attentions to another former Tottenham manager, George Graham, to ease their current difficulties' - The Daily Telegraph. Graham's last job in sole charge of a football club was at Spurs in 2001.
