Google Maps Help

I am sure last time I was in to running I could use google maps to see how far I went. I could put little red flags anywhere on the map and it would tell me the distance from A to B. Now I can only seem to put these flags on roads so cannot find out how far a run along a river is for example. Am I missing something?
