Worthie`s public view is that the defence does not need strengthening. This is a surprising comment bearing in mind the following facts:-
a)It leaked far too many goals last year and this continued in the pre season games.
b) because of the lack of skill on the ball ( and a non creative midfield) the Defence plays far tomany speculative hoof upfeild and belies worthie`s stated aim of being a passing side.
In my humble opinion we have only four defensive players who cut the mustard defensively- Green , Drury, Charlton and Shackell. Fleming and Doherty are patently not up to it and the jury is out on Loius Jean and Colin though from what I have seen in pre season games Colin is the better defender. It is regrettable that all those outfield palyers are left footed.
Insofar as constructive play is concerned only Charlton and Shackell are good enough footballers to play the ball out of defence though until Saffri is fit or a midfield playmaker is bought Worthie`s professed wish to play passing football is entirely wishful.
In my view putting all these factors together Our best outfield defence is Colin, Shackell, Charlton and Drury. Ideally we need to get a good centre back to play with Shackell in central defence and play Charlton at left back.
Will Worthie do this? The evidence suggests that the answer is "No ".
