FAO anyone who knows about sending stuff to USA

my wife prepared a package (one of those prepaid boxes, filled with french biscuits, chocolate and cooking ingredients) to send to a friend in New York, and I just took it to the post office, where the woman told me that I can't send any foodstuffs to America.

So i now have to decide whether i should a) send the package anyway and lie about the contents or b) forgeddaboudit.

How easy is it to smuggle decent food into the US of Stateside?
