i think one of Roeders attributes/downfalls is that he's a stubborn f**k and will not pay

a penny more for a player than he think hes worth. He doesn't seemed to get stuck on a particular player. He probably valued Ameobi at 1.5 mill and wasn't willing to pay more. People can blame the board for a lot of things but Glenn has control of his budget and spends it as he wishes, which in my estimation is probably at around the 2-3m mark for the rest of the season. He will want 1 possibly 2 strikers and a little left over for some January loans. People talk about the board not giving Roeder the funds for players like Ameobi, I think it's more like Roeder doesn't want to spunk all our cash on an injury plauged gamble on high wages. Just like the Martin Taylor situation, of course we had the money to buy him but Roeder wanted to get him on the cheap, Birmingham in the end won. Not the boards fault, yet they still got the blame as not giving Roeder funds and the same will no doubt happen here. I could be way off the mark but can you really see Doncaster having the balls to go into Glenns office and telll him how to manage his budget, no.
