He could play Shackell and Doherty though

Just because he says he thinks Doherty has played well (even if he hasn't), doesn't mean he's going to play him or that Shackell won't play with him. He did say he wanted to build the team around Ashton, (Francis), Shackell and Green so he must rate Shackell. Depends whether he is willing to drop Fleming because he also said that Fleming was 'the experience' in the squad.
