Doncaster had a webchat last summer

Someone specifically asked him about the Ashton/cashflow point. He didn't deny it, and instead made the point that we'd been ambitious and taken a risk by buying Ashton in the first place: in the absence of which, the board would've been castigated. The implication being that we overspent in the Prem, and paid a heavy price soon afterwards.

On the Worthington/cashflow point, I don't know. It's what Creo thinks, and his grasp of the finances is pretty impressive I'd say. And in fairness, it was always a puzzle as to why the board stuck by NW, then allowed him desperately little to spend in Summer '06 (we only bought Croft that close season): it seemed as though they didn't trust him with any more money, but in the process, were neither backing him nor sacking him. In which regard, Creo's explanation would make sense.
