And if he got Wolves up, then barring massive Sunderland-under-Keane style investment, he'd be on a hiding to nothing there too. Though that said, that's partly because his style of play is pretty, um, pragmatic: which gets you out of this league, but doesn't keep you up. Whereas someone like Mowbray is far more ambitious: with a style that makes it a lot harder to get out of this league, but a real chance of surviving and eventually prospering in the Prem.

As for Roy Keane: many Sunderland fans were pretty unconvinced last season, to be honest. But the point that was missed that was, as players just wouldn't join a newly promoted club, and didn't fancy the north-east much either, they had no choice other than to sign the best Championship and SPL players - and he inherited such a rabble that they had to make tons of these signings too in order to survive. Now, they're able to sign a slightly higher calibre of player: but even then, it'll be slow progress, and only once they've truly established themselves in mid-table will they become a more attractive club for players to join.
