The reasons are threefold:
1. We have to spend, year after year, more money than is prudent just to stay in this league. This is not, as is commonly claimed, because we are up against parachute payments, sugar daddies etc, but because clubs like Leicester, Ipswich, Southampton, Luton and Coventry have spent massively more than they can afford safe in the knowledge that the punishment will not fit the crime (as a minimum Luton should have been placed in the Conference South).
2. A lot of money is wasted. The Academy, for instance - it seems probable that only one product of our academy - Lewis - will be playing league football regularly this season. Our transfer record has been poor too - this team last year Grant bought a load of w**kers, two years previously Worthington did the same. Any club which cannot produce young players or properly identify transfer targets is going to be spending a lot just to stand still.
3. Servicing debt. A large amount of debt was incurred in building the South Stand and the Infill: the club had a hopelessly inflated idea of what funds its property dealings would generate: Doncaster believed that the two projects could be built without borrowing. In fact, at least ?10 million was borrowed.
