Well, it makes a few more games attractive & marketable to PL/Sky I guess

and gives them an excuse to get rid of a couple more smaller (ie. poorer) teams. Good old English parochialism will probably ensure that it doesn't happen too soon; but hard cash will likely win out in the end.
