Blimey, mine was the same -

survived the sinking of the Repulse at 17!! (They were feckin kaikazes too) and only got out of Singapore by comandeering the last ship in the harbour as the Japs were coming up the isthmus. I used to reflect on that at 17 but just couldn't comprehend it. We've had it pretty easy really.
