I think what happened...

was that his agent convinced him that POMPEY was a great career move (which it probably would have been). Unfortunately he made such a big fuss about wanting to leave here to go there that when Pompey pulled out he was in a position where it was almost impossible for him to stay here (crowd reaction etc) and so he HAD to go anywhere who would take him. Which turned out not to give him much choice. Though you can't blame him for wanting to leave, given the way he was made a scapegoat for the Fulham game when the whole team/tactics were totally s**te from top to bottom.
