That happens inside and outside of religious circles.

The horrible goings on in the Jersey children's home for example.

There's just a lot of nasty people out there who would be nasty whether they are religious or not.

So yes you're right it's not mutually exclusive. But I didn't mean to imply that in the first place (backtrack, backtrack...)
