How do WOTB parents view the school hols?

Not sure how much of this is true, be a shame if it is though.

I remember fondly how the summer holidays seemed a lifetime.

Growing up in a smallish village we had plenty of places to wander off too.
As parents would you feel comfortable not hearing from your kids for 4/5/6 hours in a day?
Or does the advent of the mobile allow kids this 'freedom' still, with parents just a phonecall/text message away?
