Yes, I know we've more exciting things to contemplate, but I prefer to wait and see what happens. So, in the meantime.............
I've been thinking about the tourney as a whole and would agree with many that the best team won it. However, when the final came around I realised that I really didn't care who won, because neither side really set the pulses racing. Yes, Spain were pretty and kept possession superbly.....but they weren't terribly exciting, I thought.
So when I came to make up my team of the tourney I found that it was missing most of the players I'd enjoyed watching. Like this:
Casillas; Ramos, Puyol, Marchena, Zherkov; Fibreglass or Xavi, Frings or Senna, Ballack, Sneijder (sp?), Podolski; Villa.
Doesn't set the pulses racing, does it? This is a side I'd prefer, tho' they'd probably lose to that above:
Boruc; Russki RB, Tamas (the Romanian CB who kept dribbling upfield), Kolodin (solely for the welly), Van Bronchial (prefer Zherkov, but he can't play for both); The other one out of Fibreglass or Xavi, Tuncay for effort alone, Hamit Altintopp for remaining so damn positive and creative despite the odds, Robben for being so unbelievably good if unreliable; Nihat for having balls the size of a planet (and I said i thought he'd faked the injury to dodge taking a pen ! :o0 ), Pavlythingy.
Honorable mentions for Servet, the two Grikk fullbacks, Van Nistelcheat, Modric, Grosso and oh f**k it this could take all night.
(Arshavin would've been in the 2nd side if not the first, but for his bottle job in the semi, so basically he's been dropped for being a t**t. All the Portuguese have also been dropped for t**tness).
Also, I take back my earlier statement that it wasn't a great comp - I'd expected it would dry up as a spectacle after the group stages but it didn't, did it? Thank Gawd for the exit of the Italians.
Go on then - anyone else make a Tourney XI? I bet you sodding well have, you liar.
