Utter, utter bollocks. Anyone who buys something they can't afford and without any regard to the possibility of future circumstances (within reason) deserves the consequenses that befall them.
Thye should learn to think for themselves.
As to ther being little alternative to mortgaging yourself to the hilt, well you can blame your beloved Thatcher for the - she sold all the council houses. In fact it was she that started the obsession for house ownership
