The fact that the attempt is unsuccessful is irrelevant. It's like people who get convicted of attempting to smuggle heroin when in fact they've bene palmed off with talcum powder. It doesn't matter that the offence is impossible of commission; what matters is the attempt.

Note that the FIFA rules does NOT say "And the ref will not give an offside which would otherwise be due"
