Well in WC 2002 they just scraped through the group

And in 98, they drew with Chile (equalizing in the 85th min).
Euro 2004 they didn't get out of their group.

Granted WC 2006 and Euro 2000 were ok, but that's not a great record for arguably the best team in Europe.
