griping about how many of the players in some team or other would get into England's team, as though they therefore didn't deserve to be there.

You are only as good as how you play as a team.

England's players either a) aren't as good as the English media like to make out or b) don't make the effort when playing for England as for their clubs or c) can't play together as a team. Or a bit of each.

Otherwise we would be there.
