Modern Plasmas and LCDs are only just now catching up to the top quality Cathode Ray Tubes of a few years back. The reason that they have usurped CRT TVs is not picture quality, but simply that they are so much thinner.
Showroom tellies at Dixons, Currys, etc are nearly always set up terribly and you shouldn't use that as a basis for choosing. There are dozens of good magazines that will help you choose, and the truth is that unless you are very fussy there's never *that* much difference.
