My limited experience with junior tennis

My younger daughter Amy, aged 7, is really promising tennis player, and left handed. She can play a ten+ shot rally from the near the back of the court, and is also a very good athlete, and the best runner in her school year. She plays hockey (started at two years old !) and the coach of the our ladies hockey team has pointed her out as having huge potential.

Peter, her tennis coach is always being pressed by the LTA to identify any potential stars of the future, and get them to the LTA to be assessed and on intensive training and coaching courses.

Amy, according Peter the coach, is the ideal child they would like to get into their system, but he’s having none of it, and after having heard some of the stories about how they go about it, nor am I. He’s says they’ve ruined more kids than they’ve ever made a success of, and if you don’t go along with them all they say is “She’ll never make it”.

I wasn’t too sure of what Peter was saying to start with, until I heard of the same thing from friends elder brother who is a top junior tennis coach and has a daughter is one of the top juniors in the country – but no thanks to the LTA.
