that has happened to me so often. So far I have failed to invent:

Facebook;
LinkedIn;
Dinnersite (Dutch one);
FriendsReunited (although I did invent the Dutch one);
Grunge riffs;
Thrash/hip-hop crossover (a la RATM).

and probably lots more. Although I do have a potential invention running around in my thoughts right now. Expect it to surface somewhere else on the internet within a week.
