hotmail is a spam & virus magnet

Steer well clear would be my advice. gmail is probably about the best web based email system.

In general you need to educate him about what to look out for in the big bad internet world. ie. he needs to be careful who he gives his email address to and who he talks to and needs to be careful about internet addresses and files he may be sent by email or MSN to avoid contracting viruses or being phished.

Mostly it's common sense; but that's exactly what the yoof of today (and yesterday too) seem to lack...

Additionally, you should have suitable (& kept up to date) anti-virus & anti-spyware software and a firewall.
