her inexorable disintegration is terrifying in many respects. The only book I've read in a similar vein that comes close is the Virgin Suicides, which is also a great book, but sad rather than scary. Incidentally, I have another of Eugenides books in my "to read" pile: Middlesex - read it?

Didn't see the film, although I seem to remember a review or two that put me off.
