ALWAYS use a credit card - in that way consumer protection law ensures that the CC company is responsible for any money lost due to fraud.
AB: provided paypal purchases are backed by CC then it's no problem - never have cash in the account. Personally I would use a credit card whereever I can provided the link is encrypted and you are on the site you think you are (ie. you have not been phished).
pants: nothing is fool proof. I don't know what a solo card is; but if it's not a credit card then I'd be wary of using it for internet purchases.
Of course, regarding fraudulent purchases with stolen details on sites containing illegal material leading to police raids, etc. is a different matter. In the Operation Ore case, the police were entirely at fault for not examining the evidence correctly. One just has to be very careful who you give your personal details to whether online or offline. AB sums it up pretty well.
