besides the signing of Earnie made sense at the time

at least in the context of Worthy being in charge anyway. He'd done his rebuilding of the squad during the summer when he signed Thorne, MLJ, Jarrett, Hughes et al. and at that time we were beginning to climb the table. Worthy had just sold one prolific striker so the obvious thing to do was replace him with another as, to his mind, no rebuilding was needed.

the truely dark day (with hindsight) was the triple signing of Thorne, MLJ and Jarrett
