Samsung are generally very good, at least as good as Sony for a lot less money, but it's true that Panasonic panels generally give a much clearer picture.
HD TV's come in two levels of definition: 720p and 1080p. The number indication the number of horizontal lines used to make up the image you watch, the "p" meaning those lines are "progressively scanned" don't bother with anything that sells itself as "1080i" as you'll be better off with a cheaper 720p set.
WHatever you do do not get a HD-DVD player, it's a dead format, get a Blu-Ray player, as well as playing HD movies it will upscale your existing dvds to look pretty damn nice.
PS, if you're getting anything bigger than 40", definitely get a Panasonic PLASMA, NOT LCD, Plasma's look much better at this size, and most of the old issues of screen burn aren't a concern any more, apparently.
