Basically, one of the reasons that Hucks was a success here was that we were prepared to grant him the freedom to do whatever the hell he liked, which was pretty much the only way to get the best out of him. Earnshaw was similar in that as long as you had no expectations of him doing anything at all outside the box, he would score you goals. Having two players with that sort of license in the same team at the same time put the rest of the side very badly under the hammer.

As it was, Ashton had just left; we could either we put a big, mobile lad alongside McKenzie and leave Hucks to it on the left, or buy a big, mobile lad to play up front with Hucks and an orthodox left midfielder to give the team a proper shape (And IMO Hucks wasn't suited to that role), or what we did do was spunk every penny we had on Earnshaw leaving us with a total lack of presence up front and a hole down the left hand side which teams could take the piss out of.

Sadly, we went for option 3. But, as Worthy's idea of a decent "Big mobile lad" was allegedly Chris Brown, maybe it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
