The first thing police do in these cases is

confiscate mobile phones and computers. It can take a long time to get all the information from a password protected / encrypted source and then interpret it and put it all into context. Sadly, the police may not currently have the time they need. We are talking about rare situations here, but we are also talking about loons blowing up innocent people to make their warped points.
