Sometimes I worry that I err on the side of seeing racism more often than not, but this Guardian article in patent bollocks.

Wright jarrs because of his personality not his colour - a personality suited to Lottery gameshows, Talksport and Gladiators (by some happy coicidence).

To be fair to him (and as you point out) he's not played the race card himself - which makes this article all the more irritating.
