I don't go in for the "oh my God what a great City" s**te you get about loads of places, but going to NY really made it hit home for me how pervasive the place has been in our popular culture. It also made me realise why the Statue of Liberty is so evocative for some.

A v touristy thing to do is go up the Rockefeller Centre but do it and *buy the audio tour* as one of the first things you'll do as it will help orient you.

Also, don't bother with any boat trips. Instead take the Staten Island Ferry which is *FREE* and sails within a few yards of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
