Walk from Hackesche Markt (there's a S/U-Bahn there) in Mitte

towards Oranienburgerstrasse, follow that road and there are some nice bars/cafes on the right hand side of the road. After about 10pm there are also a few ladies of the night, (fetchingly attired in basques and jeans last time I was there) to add to the local colour.

Drink and eat something. Then carry on about 1/2 kilometre (not far) and you will see the impressive Neue Synagoge on the same side of the road (note I'm taking H & S into account here). Look at it for a while, then turn around and walk back the way you came, go under the train line at the Hackesche Markt and follow it sort of left towards the Fernsehturm. Under the arches, sort of, there's a micro-brewery which I believe has a bar. Then carry on slightly drunker and go up the TV tower for a very nice night-time view of the city.

Alternatively, go to Friedrichstrasse U-Bahn, exit the station and walk along under the train line arches towards the Museumsinsel. Loads of bars / restos / cafes down there. While you're at it, carry on to the museum island and go see the Pergamon. A right f**k-off bastard of a museum, with the gates of Ishtar in it. Really.

Hope that's helpful.
