It is sub-prime mortgage hangover, which has caused a general decrease in 'special offers' from banks for people who would be re-mortgaging anyway because they are at the end of a 2 or 3 year deal. First Direct were offering best deals for ages recently, and have been overwhelmed by demand. Northern Rock was another symptom of the American sub-prime crisis, not the cause of it.
