Got into it by accident, ie recording it for someone

So for most of series, actually all of it, I watched the first five minutes, then the last 5 to see if it was recorded, then watched the finale 2 hours

You'd be amazed how the catch up and the cliff hangers, are basically the 40 minute shows rolled into one. But I take your point about missing certain bits from series 1 and 2, they can be easily explained by asking someone though

Lost is a bit like neighbours though, yeah there's some "ahhhhh look how that's fitted into that" bits, but largely even if you don't catch those, it's not that amazingly out of touch with a fresh viewer
