Tech help needed please,

I've recently installed Mozilla Thunderbird on my compoota. I downloaded the add-ons so i could use my hotmail and my work email.

I've been receiving emails ok but i cant seem to send any. Each time i try i get this message:

Sending of message failed. Message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server localhost failed. Server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connection. Please verify that your SMTP setting is correct and try again.

Any ideas anyone?
